For many, there is an irresistible draw about the great outdoors. For these people, being outside in the midst of nature is a peaceful and soothing experience. Yet many of these people have difficulty cutting loose and getting started. The stress of the real world is just a little too much to take and they keep putting off their outdoor adventure, clinging to excuses. In order to avoid such a tragic fate, it's important to plan and prepare ahead of time so that when the perfect weekend does come along, an excuse like "I don't have the right equipment" doesn't prevent one from enjoying the breathtaking beauty of the wild.

When looking at backpacking gear, it's first necessary to determine the type of backpacking trip that is going to be taken. If it's a foray into the local parks or maybe a day long hike through a nearby wood, then a lighter, smaller backpack is the way to go. While light backpacking gear is always ideal, shorter trips require so little equipment that larger, heavier backpacks aren't necessary. Of course, any backpacking gear travelers are comfortable with will be fine so long as they're willing to carry it all day. Backpackers should remember that everything packed will be hauled around from the time they leave until they return, so if it isn't necessary, then it probably shouldn't go into the backpacks.

Before selecting backpacking gear, backpackers should also remember that dishing out a few extra dollars for higher quality isn't always a bad thing. Brands like LL Bean, Eureka, and Ferrino all manufacture a good deal of backpacking gear which is made with the comfort of the user in mind. Nature provides very little in the way of comfort, so ensuring that backpacking gear is well suited to it's owner is important. An investment in quality backpacking gear also reduces the chances of something breaking during backpacking trips. If a strap breaks 10 miles from anywhere, a backpacker must either fix it or do without.

A good backpacking tent is a great idea for those looking to take backpacking trips on a more regular basis. As far as backpacking gear goes, the tent is just as important as the backpack, as it becomes a backpacker's home for a night or longer. Hoop, dome, pyramid, and freestanding are all popular backpacking tent design types, but by far the most convenient is the freestanding which allows the tent to be set up quickly and easily as it's entirely self supported. Backpackers should remember to anchor a freestanding backpacking tent with steaks, as they can be susceptible to a strong breeze.

On any backpacking trip, the backpacking gear is very important. Backpackers are venturing into the wilderness with only the backpacking gear they choose to carry, so they should ensure that the backpacking gear will hold up to the rigors of travel. With a few backpacks full of supplies, a good tent and some durable backpacking gear, a long hike through the woods can be one of the most enjoyable experiences imaginable. Don't ignore the call of the wild, just find the right backpacking gear and make the proper preparations.
